Components of a Truck Steering System

Steering Control Mechanism
  • Steering Wheel: As the component directly interfaced by the driver, the steering wheel serves as the primary means of input. By rotating it, the driver imparts steering commands to the entire steering apparatus. It affords a convenient and instinctive method for the driver to convey the intended directional alteration.
  • Steering Shaft: Connecting the steering wheel to the steering gearbox, the steering shaft transmits the rotational movement from the former to the latter.   • Steering Column: Playing a pivotal role in buttressing and protecting the steering shaft, modern steering columns often feature adjustability. This allows drivers of varying physiques and driving preferences to customize a comfortable operating position.
Steering Gearbox
This represents the central component of the steering system. Several common variants exist, including the recirculating ball type, worm and roller type, worm and sector type, and rack and pinion type. The principal function of the steering gearbox is to transmute the rotational motion received from the steering wheel into a linear motion for the steering linkage mechanism. Additionally, it can magnify or attenuate the steering effort, facilitating easier control of the truck's steering by the driver.
Steering Linkage Mechanism
  • Steering Arm: With one end affixed to the output shaft of the steering gearbox and the other end joined to the drag link, the steering arm functions as an intermediary. It relays the force and motion from the steering gearbox to the drag link, guaranteeing the faithful conveyance of the steering intent.
  • Drag Link: Connecting the steering arm and the steering knuckle arm, the drag link is instrumental in precisely transmitting the steering force and motion. This is indispensable for the prompt and accurate response of the wheels during the steering maneuver.
  • Steering Knuckle Arm: Secured to the steering knuckle, the steering knuckle arm interfaces with the drag link and channels the steering force to the steering knuckle. This ultimately instigates the deflection of the wheels.
  • Steering Tie Rod Arm: Attached to the left and right steering knuckles respectively, the steering tie rod arms, in conjunction with the tie rod, form the steering trapezoid mechanism. This mechanism ensures that the left and right steering wheels can deviate in a coordinated fashion, adhering to a specific angular relationship during steering operations. Thereby, it underwrites the stability and accuracy of the vehicle's turning.
  • Tie Rod: Linking the left and right steering tie rod arms, the tie rod permits adjustment of its length, which in turn modifies the toe-in value of the steering wheels. This adjustment bears significant implications for the vehicle's straight-line driving stability and overall steering performance.
Steering Power Assist System
  • Power Steering Pump: Ordinarily driven by the engine, the power steering pump supplies hydraulic or electric power assistance to the steering system. It transforms the engine's mechanical energy into hydraulic or electrical energy, alleviating the driver's steering exertion.
  • Power Steering Cylinder: In a hydraulic power-assisted steering system, the power steering cylinder ingests the high-pressure oil furnished by the power steering pump and generates a force to actuate the tie rod or the steering knuckle arm, thereby facilitating wheel steering.
  • Steering Control Valve: In response to the rotation of the steering wheel and the vehicle's driving state, the steering control valve governs the flow rate and direction of the hydraulic oil output by the power steering pump. This enables exacting control of the steering force and timely modulation of the power assistance.
Steering Control System
  • Steering Sensor: Continuously surveilling parameters such as the steering wheel's turning angle, steering speed, and steering torque, the steering sensor relays these signals to the steering control unit.
  • Steering Control Unit: Upon receiving the signals from the steering sensor, the steering control unit amalgamates them with other data, like the vehicle's driving speed and the engine's rotational speed. Through its internal control algorithms, it computes the optimal steering power assistance level and steering control strategy. Subsequently, it dispatches control commands to the steering power assist system and the steering linkage mechanism to actualize precise governance of the entire steering system.
